The position of the England national team coach is unexpectedly offered to West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson. It is expected that an agreement will be reached within the next two days in the premises of London's Wembley Stadium.
In an official statement released on Sunday by the Football Association (FA), the club allowed the specialist, who has expressed his desire to take on this job multiple times, to negotiate the possibility of replacing the Italian Fabio Capello who resigned in the summer. The 64-year-old Hodgson is currently the only coach with whom FA is in direct talks.
Throughout his career, the Englishman has managed three national teams: Switzerland, Finland, and the United Arab Emirates. Since the 1960s, the Swiss team, who failed to qualify for major tournaments, reached the quarter-finals in the 1994 World Cup and secured a spot in the 1996 European Championships. During his tenure, the Finnish national team reached their highest ever FIFA ranking of 33rd in 2006-2007.
It has been speculated for several years that Hodgson could take over the reins of the England national team, but his reputation suffered in the first half of the 2010-2011 season when he took over at Liverpool and was soon dismissed due to poor results. Currently, the team he manages, West Brom, is in 10th place in the Premier League.
So far, the favorite to replace Capello has been Harry Redknapp, the manager of Tottenham in London.
