Newcastle (65 points) is in fifth place, but has the same number of points as the London club Tottenham, which crushed Bolton 4-1 and is in fourth place.
Meanwhile, Chelsea (61 points) practically dashed their hopes of finishing in the top four and securing a spot in next season's Champions League tournament with just two games left in the season.
However, Roberto Di Matteo's team could defend their trophies next season if they defeat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final on May 19.
