Bento stays at the helm of the Portuguese national team © EuroFootball.com

The coach of the Portuguese national team, Paulo Bento, has signed a new contract valid until 2014. The previous contract was supposed to expire after the start of the European Championship in June. There were talks that poor results in this tournament would lead to changes in the coaching staff, but the new agreement denied that. Bento replaced Carlos Queiroz as head coach and despite a rough start to the qualifying tournament, he managed to secure a spot in the final stage of the European Championship. Portugal will play their next match against Macedonia on May 25, and will start their European campaign on June 9 with a match against Germany.
