At least five football enthusiasts from Iran were crushed in a stampede after the World Cup qualifying match between the national teams of Iran and Japan. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Iran has launched an investigation into this tragedy.

According to local television reports, the tragedy occurred when, after the match, a huge crowd of around 100,000 fans tried to leave the "Azadi" stadium in Tehran. In addition to the five fatalities, more than 40 enthusiasts were injured, with some fans in critical condition.

The unexpected victory of the home team with two goals by Munich striker Vahid Hashemian resulted in a 2-1 win.
