Strategist Sir Alex Ferguson downplayed the failure in the English championship and claimed that it would take a long time for the team that won the title to catch up with his team.
In the final round, Manchester City dramatically defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-2 and surpassed Manchester United only on goal difference. It is worth noting that the 'Red Devils' with 89 points will enter Premier League history as the highest scoring team, but without winning the trophy.
"Failure is very painful, but in 26 years we have experienced many ups and downs," said Ferguson. "We have a rich history that no one can match. It will take Manchester City a hundred years to achieve that."
He continued: "We have faced a new challenge, and we like it. Our competitors understand well that I am not going anywhere."
Even before the final round, the Scot did not promise major changes in the squad: "I don't think we need to freshen up the squad. We have a great base, and young players, I hope, will develop rapidly. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley have everything to follow in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. Besides, we have the Da Silva brothers, David de Gea. They are overflowing with talent."
It is speculated that among the footballers in Ferguson's sights in the transfer market will be Inter Milan's leader Wesley Sneijder, Borussia Dortmund's Shinji Kagawa, as well as Lille's full-back Eden Hazard.
