London's "Chelsea" hero Didier Drogba confirmed on Monday the rumors that had spread about the Champions League final. After this season, the 34-year-old footballer will leave the club he has represented since 2004.
Drogba first informed his teammates of his decision.
Although the player himself did not reveal where he will play next season, it is reported that he has nearly finished negotiations with Shanghai "Shenhua". Drogba's contract with Chelsea will officially end on June 30, 2012.
"I have decided to leave the team, but I could not look my teammates in the eye and tell them this news. Although for three years I talked about the possibility of not playing in London, now it is difficult for me to say 'goodbye'. I do not feel like I am leaving this team," said Drogba.
"On the other hand, I could not sit on the bench and watch the other players, when the team management wants to see a rejuvenated and different team. Now I am facing a new challenge, as I do not know where I will play yet," said the Ivory Coast football star.
Wearing the "Chelsea" jersey, Drogba scored 157 goals, but the most important ones were in Saturday's Champions League final. Drogba scored the equalizing goal in the 88th minute of the match, and the winning penalty kick during the penalty shootout.
