On Friday, Achilles tendon surgery was performed on Lithuanian national team defender Marius Stankevicius, which will prevent him from playing for at least three months.

The Roma footballer lay on the surgeons' table in Finland, and will soon return to Italy to continue rehabilitation.

Medical professionals had to postpone the surgery slightly, as Stankevicius fell ill. The Lithuanian, who will celebrate his 31st birthday in the middle of July, will only return to the field at the beginning of the new season.

It is unclear whether he will be able to help the Lithuanian national team in the first matches of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia at home (September 7) and Greece away (September 11).

In the "Serie A" championship, the defender played 11 matches before the injury, starting in the lineup for 9 of them while playing for Lazio.
