Gerrard: defeat for France would not be a tragedy © EuroFootball.com

The captain of the England national team Steven Gerrard insists that losing to the French team would not be a tragedy.

On Monday, the battles in the European Championship will be started by the last four teams from Group D.

"This is just the first match," the midfielder spoke. "So the world won't collapse, no matter how we play. The most important thing is that after winning we wouldn't rush to lift the cup, and after losing we wouldn't sink into depression, as there are still two more matches ahead."

Talking about the suspended forward Wayne Rooney, a player from the Liverpool club added: "Of course, he is disappointed and regrets what he was punished for. But any team would miss such a player - he was one of the best in the Premier League last season. We hope to give him the opportunity to shine on the field not only in the third group stage match, but also in the knockout stages."

It is speculated that Danny Welbeck will play in the attacking line of the England national team, supported by Stewart Downing and James Milner on the flanks.
