talian national team forward Antonio Cassano hopes that there are no homosexual footballers in his country's national team competing in the European Championship.

During a press conference when asked if there were any representatives of sexual minorities in the team, the AC Milan player replied: "The coach warned not to ask that. If I were to say what I think... I hope there aren't."

However, the Italian later had to publicly apologize for such a statement: "I sincerely regret that my words caused anger among gay rights activists. Homophobia is foreign to me."

He added: "I didn't mean to offend anyone. I have no right to question people's sexual orientation - I just wanted to say that it's not a problem for me, I respect all choices."

Cassano appeared in the starting lineup in the first match of the European Championship against Spain.
