On Saturday evening, Franciszek Smuda resigned from his position as the coach of the Polish national team. The 63-year-old specialist made the decision after the final Group A match of the European Championship, in which the tournament hosts lost 0-1 to the Czech Republic and were eliminated from further competition.
"This is undoubtedly the end of my journey. The contract expires along with the championship. Thank you all," Smuda said.
"We did everything we could. Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes in our passes. In the second half, we had to fight relentlessly to regain possession of the ball."
He continued: "We have to swallow this bitter pill. Perhaps we thought too strongly that the Czech Republic was a beatable opponent. However, we did not take advantage of numerous opportunities in the first half and ended up losing."
Smuda also added: "Over these one and a half years, we have built a team that can successfully compete in the future. It wasn't perfect, not as good as we had hoped, but that's football."
