Due to football madness, a young man watched the European Football Championship games for 11 days in a row, but it cost him his life.

According to the "Sanxiang Metropolis" newspaper in Hunan Province, the 26-year-old man was found by his mother. It is reported that he died after the June 18th match where Italy beat Ireland 2-0.

The time difference between Europe and China means that most EURO 2012 matches in China start at 2:45 a.m. and end at dawn.

The newspaper claims that the young man belonged to the university football team and had no previously reported health issues.

"We occasionally took breaks, but he watched football every day and didn't miss a single game," one of his friends told journalists.

According to his friends, the young man, who was a fan of the English and French national teams, seemed upset when Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli scored in Monday's match, leading Italy to the quarterfinals.

"Maybe he felt tired because he couldn't sleep night after night," one of them speculated.

The emergency room doctor Liu Zhiling told the newspaper: "The young man had no health complaints. However, lack of sleep weakened his immune system. Moreover, while watching football, he drank and smoked. It's not good to drink beer instead of water. Alcohol is harmful to the body."
