Andres Iniesta argues that the criticisms directed at the Spanish national team for playing boring football should be redirected towards opponents who choose overly defensive tactics.
Vicente Del Bosque's team aims to become the first team to win three major tournaments in a row: triumphing in the European Championship in 2008, the World Cup in 2010, and reaching the semifinals of the continental championship this year.
However, in recent times, the Spaniards have received criticism for their "tiki taka" playing style, which often turns into endless ball possession in their own half.
Iniesta dismissed such criticism: "Not everyone likes the same things, you can't always agree. But it is important to understand that when one team attacks and the other only defends and leaves no free spaces, football cannot be as beautiful as when both teams attack and try to win.
"We have our style, which has brought us great victories. I respect other opinions, but a few years ago this style of football changed Spain's results in a completely different direction."
Del Bosque also supported Barcelona's footballer: "Of course, we don't want to stagnate. We want to move forward, and the trophies we've won prove that. We have our style, not everyone likes it, but many people just look for flaws."
