The Italian newspaper "Gazzetta dello Sport" apologized for the published cartoon depicting Mario Balotelli as King Kong.

After the Italian victory in the quarterfinals of the European Championship against England, the black "Man City" striker was portrayed climbing on London's symbol Big Ben and hitting footballs flying towards him. Some readers interpreted this as racism.

In a statement by the editors of "Gazzetta dello Sport" it is announced: "Some of our readers were not satisfied with Valerio Marini's cartoon depicting Balotelli as King Kong. This is not one of the talented artist's best works, as currently everything, absolutely everything, can be misunderstood."

“If this drawing appeared offensive to readers, we apologize. However, those who accuse the newspaper or poor Marini of racism are crossing the line. We have always fought against racism and condemned actions targeting Balotelli and others."
