Germany's national team coach Joachim Low urged his players not to hang their heads after losing in the semi-final of the European Championship.
Italy gained a two-goal advantage in the first half, and after the break, the Germans were only able to narrow the gap - Mesut Ozil converted a penalty in added time by the referee.
"Due to our mistakes in the first half, we conceded two goals, and then it was difficult, but the team showed their heart and fought until the end," he said. "We had opportunities to close the gap, and if we had done that earlier, the game could have turned out differently.
"It's very difficult to play against a team like Italy when they have a two-goal advantage. Then they defend with all their might. Of course, we are disappointed, but that doesn't mean we should start doubting everything. Let's just try to play even better in the future."
He added: "Tears are flowing in the dressing room, and there is total silence because no one has anything to say."
The captain Philipp Lahm seconded him: "This is an extremely painful failure. We made unforgivable mistakes that led to the missed goals. We worked hard in the first half and had chances, but we couldn't afford to make such mistakes in defense."
