Hundreds of thousands of people in the Spanish capital Madrid welcomed back the national team returning from the victorious European Championship.
Even the plane carrying "La Roja" was marked with a huge logo: "We are proud of our team."
The footballers were greeted by the Spanish royal family: King Juan Carlos, Prince Felipe, his wife Princess Letizia, and others. "Congratulations to all of you on behalf of the family and the entire country," the king said. "Once again you have delighted the whole nation."
This was a joyful celebration in a state plagued by political and economic problems, and the newspaper "El Mundo" did not miss the opportunity to publish an ironic headline: "Key to solving the problems: The Government with Prime Minister Vicente Del Bosque and his ministers."
