The legendary Brazilian Pele believes that the outstanding performance of Spain's national team goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the European Championship deserves the title of the best player of the year.
The 32-year-old Real Madrid goalkeeper conceded only one goal in the championship held in Poland and Ukraine, contributing significantly to Spain's title defense.
"Usually the 'Golden Ball' goes to attacking players, but I find it difficult to evaluate them because I haven't seen all the matches," Pele said. "But I have no doubts about Casillas' performance in each of the major tournaments. Now is the perfect time to award him this prize."
He continued: "His contribution to victories is huge. A team can have the best forward, but there will be no victories if there is no outstanding goalkeeper in the back. People just don't talk much about them."
Pele was also disappointed, as there are few players in the football world at the moment who can challenge Argentine Lionel Messi.
"Every era has its best football player. Sometimes four or five players fight for this title, but now there is a lack. What can we compare to Messi? Neymar? Cristiano Ronaldo is second, but who comes after him? The media also plays an important role - I had to do a lot to become who I was, but now all it takes is to score one beautiful goal and you will be celebrated," complained the Brazilian.
