Marijampolės "Sūduvos" club has appointed 41-year-old football specialist Darius Gvildas as the new head coach of the team. Speaking about his work in Marijampolė, the new team strategist stated that the most important tasks are to make the "Sūduva" team play aggressively and to develop local youth.
- Was the invitation to coach "Sūduva" very unexpected?
- Actually, the offer was unexpected. The invitation intrigued me and now I am already in Marijampolė.
- What ambitions do you have coming to lead the Marijampolė team?
- It's difficult to start coaching a team in the middle of the season, but my ambitions are always high. Initially, I will strive to make the team play the type of football that I envision.
- How would you describe your football style?
- My football is aggressive. It is important that the players are always ready to play and fight with all their might.
- In your opinion, what was "Sūduva" lacking the most this season?
- "Sūduva" played academic football. I believe that what was missing for the Marijampolė team was precisely aggression. Aggressiveness starts with character and ambition. The team started the first round very well, then perhaps relaxed, maybe believed too early that the result had already been achieved. The second round showed that there is still work to be done.
- How long will it take to make corrections to the team's game?
- A difficult question. In some cases, a month is enough, in others - two weeks, for others it takes more time. It is currently very difficult to predict.
- What, in your opinion, are the potential opportunities for "Sūduva" this season?
- This season, quite a few points were lost in games where they should not have been lost. Relaxation, lack of concentration were the main problems for "Sūduva" this year. The game of the Marijampolė team was not bad, but it lacked excitement, energy, aggression, and desire. We will try to bring back these necessary elements. The most important thing is to correct this, then we will see the team's potential.
- What are the goals set by Marijampolė's "Sūduva" club for this season?
- Our goals are to become winners of the Lithuanian championship and to develop local youth.
- You worked with the reserves of "Tauro" in Tauragė. What do you think about the youth in Marijampolė?
- They are very interesting youth, playing good, attractive football. From what I have seen of them, I can only speak positively. Now I will see these players up close. I have not formed an opinion on each player individually yet.
