Legendary Glasgow club "Rangers" will only compete in the fourth tier of the Scottish league - "Irn-Bru Third division" next season.
This was decided by a vote of 30 teams belonging to the Scottish Football League, with 25 representatives supporting this option. Initially, it was expected that "Rangers" would be allowed to compete in the higher "First division".
However, it is possible that this scenario will not materialize, as with the blessing of the leaders of the Scottish "Premier" league, "Rangers" plans to form a "Premier" league 2, where the current teams of the "First division" will compete without the Glasgow team.
Severe sanctions were imposed due to "Rangers" bankruptcy: since the debts reached almost 180 million euros, the club was formally liquidated, and the new owners, who bought and renamed the team to "Newco Rangers", failed to convince the leaders of other teams to allow them to return to the elite group.
The decision described disappointed the chief executive of the Scottish Football Association Stewart Regan, predicting that it would lead to a financial disaster and ultimately result in the collapse of the country's football.
"Rangers" is the most successful club in football history, having won the national championship a record 54 times.
