Defender Chris Smalling, who suffered a leg injury, will be out of the lineup for ten weeks.
The footballer missed the European Championship in June due to groin pain and now risks missing the start of the UEFA Champions League season.
"We decided not to delay and to undergo surgery," said Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson. "Chris is having a tough time, but he is still young, so he will bounce back."
Last season, Smalling played four matches in the English championship. In the Champions League, he appeared on the field twice.
