The president of the Italian Football Federation, Maurizio Beretta, supported the decision to allow 12 reserve players to be registered for country's championship matches.

This option was proposed by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis just three months ago. It is expected that this will allow the coach to vary the lineup more. The decision will apply not only to the Serie A championship, but also to the Italian Cup and Super Cup tournaments.

However, not everyone supported this innovation. According to Roma coach Zdenek Zeman, 7 substitutes would have been enough: "The situation will not change too much. This was really not necessary, as 18 footballers are completely sufficient."

The season in Italy starts next weekend.
