Liutauras Varanavičius denies the reports that he may return to the position of President of the Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) that have appeared in the media.
This week it emerged that the current LFF leader, Julius Kvedaras, who replaced Varanavičius earlier this year, is under scrutiny by law enforcement for possible misappropriation of UEFA funds. According to "Lietuvos rytas", Kvedaras, who is associated with the criminal world, has been suspended from his duties for half a year by the court.
"I declared my position regarding leading the Lithuanian Football Federation back in the spring of this year when I withdrew from the race for the position of LFF President, and I will not change it," Varanavičius writes in a statement that was released.
The former LFF President also urged the football community to address the current issues: "I believe that the events of this week show that it is time to call for new elections for the leadership of the LFF (both the President of the LFF and the Executive Committee), therefore I sincerely wish the football community the determination and strength to strive for democratic elections and unity in appointing new leaders who would want and be able to work for Lithuanian football."
