Madrid strategist Jose Mourinho has no doubt that the club's prestigious history will allow them to compete for the best footballers even with wealthier teams.
This summer, the market was dominated by the French team Paris St.Germain, who spent well over 100 million euros and lured players like Zlatan Ibrahimović, Thiago Silva, Lucas Moura, and others. A few days ago, St. Petersburg's Zenit also made some big purchases: Axel Witsel and Hulk moved to Russia for 80 million euros.
However, Mourinho remains calm: "Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich... These clubs are unique. Titles, European cups, history, stories, fans... You can't buy that. The best players want to play here," said the Portuguese to the newspaper AS.
"Also, UEFA is implementing financial regulations. This will create obstacles for clubs that are not well-structured, even if they have plenty of cash. Real has the potential to keep all its leaders, like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Iker Casillas, and others.
"But those who rely on owner investments will find themselves in a more difficult situation because they will lack structure and history. The new financial rules will bring benefits to the game of football."
