On Friday, the Executive Committee of the Lithuanian Football Federation gathers for its meeting. The agenda includes a decision regarding the crisis in the leadership of the LFF.
Currently, the Lithuanian Football Federation is officially without a "head" - the Kaunas District Court decided last week to apply a measure of procedural impact on LFF President Julius Kvedaras, removing him from office for a six-month period.
Allegations have been made against J. Kvedaras regarding the possible embezzlement of money from international football organizations intended for LFF projects.
Representatives from FIFA and UEFA have been invited to the LFF Ex-Comm meeting.
Following this court decision, football opposition has become more active. Various opponents of the LFF leader demand changes in Lithuanian football.
Rumors say that the leadership of the LFF could be taken over by Member of Parliament Žilvinas Šilgalis. It is claimed that he should be given the duties of the first Vice President of the LFF during the period of the highest federation president's removal.
Ž. Šilgalis himself did not deny this possibility.
"We all know what the situation in football is now. Passions have flared up, demands for change are being made. The football community needs a stabilizer. If the football community decides that I am suitable for the role of stabilizer, I would take it," said the politician.
Ž. Šilgalis stated that he is not associated with either the current leadership of the LFF or the opposition. He emphasized that he is neutral in this conflict of interests and opinions.
"I see that there is a struggle for positions taking place. Not for football, but for positions. It would be much better for football if all of these struggles subsided and real democratic elections could be held. I would try to help football during that period until the passions subsided and those elections could be held," said the Member of Parliament.
According to the politician, so far nobody has offered him the position of "stabilizer." He has not discussed this with either the leadership of the LFF or people not associated with them.
"I have many people around me who belong to the football community. They are not connected to either the LFF leadership or the opposition. I spoke with them and explained what I am saying now," stated Ž. Šilgalis.
Ž. Šilgalis is not a stranger to sports. He is a member of the Seimas Youth and Sports Affairs Committee and often attends football matches.
