Barcelona defender Thiago Alcantara suffered a serious injury in the match against Sevilla and will be out of the lineup for two months.
The Catalan team's defender got injured in the second half of the match, but continued playing for some time since Barcelona's coach Tito Vilanova had already made three substitutions. Later, Thiago was in such pain that he could barely walk, and even the referee helped him leave the field.
Due to excessive pain, Barcelona's medical staff couldn't thoroughly examine the player's knee right away. Detailed tests were only carried out on Sunday.
It turned out that the defender's injury is more serious than initially thought - Thiago injured the cruciate ligaments in his right knee. Barcelona's medical team predicts that the player will only be able to return to the field in about eight weeks at best. A conservative treatment method will be applied, meaning that surgery will not be needed.
Due to the injury, one of the most talented Barcelona defenders will miss at least 11 official team matches.
In October, Thiago will not be able to play against Lisbon's Benfica, Madrid's Real, La Coruna's Deportivo, Glasgow's Celtic, and Rayo Vallecano. In November, the defender will not appear in matches against Vigo's Celta, Glasgow Celtic, RCD Mallorca, Zaragoza, Moscow's Spartak, and Valencia's Levante.
