The main goalkeeper of the club, Fabien Barthez, has been disqualified for three months by the decision of the French disciplinary committee. Moreover, the player's disqualification may be repeated if he has behavior problems on the field in the future. This Saturday, the Frenchman will still be able to play against "Nantes" because the decision will take effect later.
Former one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, F. Barthez, received such a strict punishment for slashing the referee Abdellah El Achir during a friendly match in Morocco with "Wydad Casablanca" back in February. The 33-year-old Frenchman got angry when the referee decided to send off another "Olympique" player, Frederic Dehu. Sitting on the bench as a substitute goalkeeper, he ran onto the field, argued, and ended up slashing the referee.
The French team also punished the player after the incident. Despite the long-term suspension over these three months, F. Barthez will only miss four French Championship matches and two friendly international matches during this period. The disqualification will end on July 25th.
