"Arsenal" leaders: financially, after two years, we will be able to compete with anyone in the world © EuroFootball.com

London's Arsenal board chairman Peter Hill-Wood insists that Robin van Persie was sold this summer not for financial, but for sporting reasons.

The leader of the Netherlands national team signed a contract with Manchester United for 30 million euros.

"We make these decisions for sporting, not financial reasons. Manager Arsene Wenger is not short of money to spend," said Hill-Wood.

Meanwhile, chief executive Ivan Gazidis stated: "Our ambitions are solely focused on football: we want to be among the strongest in England and Europe, to win trophies. The club is in a great position and has a good reputation. In the next two years, Arsenal will have enough financial resources to compete with anyone."

And he added: "I am confident that we will fight for titles and reach new heights."
