High praise for the Lithuanian referee officiating the England national team game © EuroFootball.com

FIFA category pitch referee Gediminas Mažeika, with assistants Vytautas Šimkus and Saulius Dirda, along with reserve referee Sergejus Slyva, worked a match between the national teams of England and San Marino on October 12.

The duel, watched by 86,645 spectators at the legendary Wembley Stadium in London, ended with a score of 5:0 in favor of the English team.

LFTA.lt reports that this week our country's football referees received evaluations from the Belgian inspector Michel Piraux. Having refereed 14 UEFA Champions League matches in the past, M. Piraux spoke favorably about G. Mažeika and the team's performance during the match at the Wembley Stadium.

The inspector from Belgium gave the Kaunas-based referee G. Mažeika a rating of 8.3. Assistant referees Vytautas Šimkus and Saulius Dirda also received a mark of 8.3. The work of reserve referee Sergejus Slyva was rated 8.

In his report, the Belgian inspector noted the good physical fitness of G. Mažeika and his colleagues, their excellent knowledge of the rules, objectivity, and the quality of refereeing.

G. Mažeika will officiate in the next international match on November 8. His assistants will be Kaunas-based Vytautas Šimkus and Vytenis Kazlauskas. The team will also include three Vilnius-based referees - Nerijus Dunauskas, Artūras Pipiras, and Jurijus Paškovskis. These will be matches from one of the UEFA Europa League groups. The teams to be refereed by the Lithuanians will be revealed a week before the start of the matches.
