The England Football Association has officially requested UEFA for another spot for their country in next season's Champions League if they triumph in the tournament this year. The four places in the tournament are designated for the strongest teams in England, based on their positions in the Premier League.
Liverpool has a chance to win the Champions League this season if they defeat their opponents in the semi-finals starting on Wednesday, and then the winner of the duel between Milan and PSV in the final.
Although the tournament champions are guaranteed a spot next season, it is unlikely that Liverpool, if they win the title, can expect such a privilege as spots are allocated based on results in the national championship. Currently, Liverpool is in fifth place, but their chances of surpassing Everton in fourth place are uncertain. In such a situation, Liverpool would have to play only in the UEFA Cup.
"There are no possibilities for England to have more than four teams in the Champions League," said UEFA representative Lars Christer Olsson. "In my opinion, it is more important to qualify for the tournament based on the league position rather than winning the tournament."
