UEFA is considering the possibility of abolishing the Europa League tournament and instead expanding the Champions League from 32 to 64 teams.
"We are considering such an option, and we will make a final decision in 2014. So far, nothing has been decided," said UEFA president Michel Platini, adding that this format could be implemented starting in 2015.
These discussions arose in the context of rumors about an alternative to the Champions League - the Euro Super League. This idea is reportedly supported by the most powerful European clubs who are not satisfied with the current system.
"I am not bothered by talk of the Euro Super League. I can't imagine how it could work outside of UEFA's jurisdiction. Who would officiate? In which stadiums would the matches be played?" rhetorically asked Platini.
