The Netherlands were shaken by a tragic event: during a youth football match, enraged teenagers fatally beat a sideline referee.
41-year-old Richard Nieuwenhuizen was attacked, beaten, and kicked during a match between "Buitenboys" and "Nieuw Sloten" team members. The incident occurred in front of his son, and a few hours later, medics confirmed his death.
Police detained three 15-16 year old suspects, and the Amsterdam club withdrew from tournaments and temporarily suspended its activities.
"It is tragic and incomprehensible that this could happen in our sports fields," said Dutch Sports Minister Edith Schippers.
