My goals scored are worthless if the team doesn't win, says the world's best footballer Lionel Messi.
The Barcelona star demonstrates impressive athletic form: this calendar year he has defeated opponents' goalkeepers 91 times, surpassing the legendary German Gerd Muller, who scored 85 times.
"I am happy about the goals scored and records improved, but this year could have been better in terms of trophies won," Messi said. "I always say: if the team doesn't win, my goals are not valuable."
The 25-year-old Argentine recently signed a new contract with the Spanish club, which will be valid until 2018.
"I hope to finish my career in Catalonia, and this contract is another step towards fulfilling this dream," Messi added, wishing strength to coach Tito Vilanova, who is battling cancer.
