The European Championship in 2020 will take place in thirteen different cities in various countries, which will be announced next year, confirmed by UEFA.
In the detailed organization plan of the Old Continent championship, it is noted that cities can apply for 13 packages: 12 of them will consist of three matches in the group stage, one - organizing the semi-finals and finals.
Each country can submit two applications: one for the regular package (group matches, quarter-finals, and semi-finals), one for the decisive matches (semi-finals and final). This means that the latter matches will take place in the same city.
The requirements for stadiums are also confirmed: group stage and quarter-final matches must take place in stadiums with at least 50,000 seats, quarter-finals - 60,000 seats, and semi-finals and finals - 70,000 seats. However, UEFA will make exceptions and allow two cities to host matches in stadiums with 30,000 seats, but the construction of all new stadiums must start no later than 2016.
In 2020, as usual, there will be no host countries for the championship, so all UEFA member states will compete in the qualifying rounds. The specific cities assigned to the group stage will be based on the principle of "no more than a 2-hour flight," which should preserve the fans' ability to support their team.
Interestingly, one of the requirements for cities is to have two international airports. Nevertheless, it is expected that this will create opportunities for smaller cities in smaller countries to host the championship.
