He was presented with the award by legendary footballer Bobby Charlton. In second place was "Manchester United" striker Danny Welbeck, and in third place was "Chelsea" defender Ashley Cole. Steven Gerrard was delighted with the recognition: "It means a lot to me that I was rated among such talented players. I am very pleased with this individual award. My self-confidence was greatly influenced by the coach's trust and the captain's title. It was a good year." The other two players who have won this award twice are "Manchester United" striker Wayne Rooney and "Chelsea" midfielder Frank Lampard. Steven Gerrard was first named the English player of the year in 2007. The award for the best U-21 player went to another "Liverpool" player, Jordan Henderson.
