The Spanish superclub refused to comment on rumors about a possible purchase of the London defender Roberto Pires this summer.
The 31-year-old Frenchman's contract with "The Gunners" is valid for another year, but the club has already warned the player that only year-long contracts will be signed with him thereafter.
It is claimed that now, not receiving any new proposals from "Arsenal" to extend his contract, R. Pires is considering leaving the London club. Among the candidates mentioned were "Lyon" and "Valencia." Although Valencia has long been considered a favorite to acquire the French national team defender, now, according to the Spanish media, "Barcelona" has become serious contenders to attract R. Pires.
Nevertheless, "Barcelona" sports director Txiki Beguiristain told the British television "Sky" that he does not intend to comment on these rumors: "We will not comment on rumors about this or any other player. Right now, we are focused on the Spanish championship."
After yesterday's match, in which "Real" crushed Racing Santander 5-0, Barcelona's advantage in the Spanish championship decreased to three points, but the Catalan superclub could restore the six-point lead if they defeat last season's champion, Valencia, away on Sunday.
