FIFA officially confirmed that the 2014 World Cup will feature the use of modern goal line technology.
The long-awaited system was tested during the Club World Cup held in December, and additional tests will be conducted during the Confederations Cup this summer. It is hoped that the technology will help avoid controversies when referees fail to make the right decision, affecting the results of teams.
Two different technologies have been tested so far: "Goalref," based on magnetic sensors that detect when the ball crosses the goal line, and "Hawkeye," which relies on cameras capturing various angles.
The final decision on which technology to implement is expected to be made in April.
