On Sunday in the 35th round of the Spanish championship, what Real Madrid fans were hoping for did not happen: the championship leader Barcelona defeated last season's champion Valencia 2-0 in their away match, extending their lead to six points with only three rounds left.

Both goals in the match held at the "La Mestalla" stadium were scored within two minutes: in the 28th minute, Barcelona star Ronaldinho scored a fantastic goal with a shot from 30 meters, which will contend for one of the best goals of the season. Just a few minutes later, after a pass from Ronaldinho and individual effort, the most productive player of La Liga this season, Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o, scored another goal.

Having lost, Valencia only retained theoretical hopes of fighting for a spot in next year's UEFA Champions League.

In other important matches played earlier, Barcelona's Espanyol and Villarreal secured victories. The latter club significantly strengthened their position in the fight for a spot in the UEFA Champions League next year with this victory.

Victories were also won by Albacete and Getafe, who defeated Levante from Valencia and Real Sociedad from San Sebastian at home, respectively.

In the last Sunday match, Deportivo from La Coruna defeated Atletico Madrid 2-0, moving up to ninth place on the tournament table.

Sunday results:

Valencia 0 - 2 Barcelona

Soria 3 - 1 San Sebastiano

Getafe 2 - 0 Real Sociedad

Albacete 3 - 0 Levante

La Coruna 2 - 0 Madrid
