British footballer David Beckham, currently playing for Paris Saint Germain, has become a global ambassador for Chinese football. It is hoped that he will improve the image of Chinese football in the world.
A strong blow was dealt to the reputation of football in China when former Chelsea player Didier Drogba left, and later the Chinese football league was accused of match-fixing.
37-year-old David Beckham has agreed to represent Chinese football worldwide: "It is a great honor for me to play such an important role in the history of Chinese football. Football is a wonderful game, inspiring many people around the world. I am happy to introduce it to an even larger number of fans."
The footballer will attend matches of the Chinese football league and meet with children whom he will promote football to, so that they may decide to pursue this branch of sports in the future.
Didier Drogba left Shanghai Shenhua club after half a year, even though he had a contract for two more years. He was loaned to Galatasaray club under unclear conditions.
There were also scandals in the Chinese league related to corruption, which landed the country's top referee in prison. Another 58 referees were suspended by the international football federation.
