Greek footballer Giorgos Katidis will never play for the national football team – such a punishment was imposed on him by the Greek Football Federation for a Nazi salute during Saturday's match.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Greek Football Federation, the gesture made by "AEK Athens" player was described as a huge insult to all victims of Nazi atrocities, as reported by "The Huffington Post".
The 20-year-old G. Katidis raised his right arm up in celebration of a goal scored against "Veria" in the country's football championship. Later, he explained that he did not know the meaning of this gesture and on his "Twitter" account he insisted that he does not support Nazism.
The team also promises strict sanctions for the player – even AEK supporters demand that he be removed from the team.
G. Katidis has played for the Greek national youth team, but now the doors are closed to him for both the youth and senior national teams for life.
