Michael Owen announced that after this season he will end his professional football career.
The 33-year-old forward, who scored 40 goals in 89 matches for the England national team, has represented clubs such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle, and Manchester United. This season he wore the Stoke shirt, but due to injuries played only seven matches.
"I am proud to announce that I am ending my journey as a professional player, which has been incredibly successful," Owen said, thanking his family for their support.
The Englishman first caught the world's attention in 1998, when at just 18 years old he scored an impressive goal against Argentina in the World Cup. Three years later, he scored a hat-trick against Germany in Munich and helped secure a historic 5-1 victory.
Throughout his club career, Owen scored 220 goals and won the English Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, as well as the UEFA Cup. In 2001, the forward was recognized as the best European footballer.
Later, injuries hindered the footballer, preventing him from finding a place in the England national team and representative teams. Nevertheless, he remains the only Englishman to score goals in four major tournaments.
