The AEK football club in Athens, Greece, is known for having particularly passionate fans. This time, during a match with the "Panthrakikos" team, they forced the referees to interrupt the game. With 3 minutes left until the end of the match and an own goal scored by an Athens player, the fans couldn't stay in their seats.
They stormed the stadium and simply chased the players off the field. The match could not be completed, and the defeated Athens players dropped to a lower division. They needed a victory in this match in order to remain in the highest division.
When Athens defender Mavroudis Bougaidis accidentally directed the ball into his own goal, the supporters couldn't handle the tension and took it upon themselves to teach the supported team's players a lesson.
They wanted to suspend the match even before it started, when several fans invaded the field, but the referees decided that the game could go on.
This is the first time in history that a club has been forced to move down to a lower division. AEK Athens has been national champions 29 times, played in the Europa League last season, and competed for a spot in the Champions League in the 2007/2008 season.
