Professional Footballers' Association has announced six candidates for the best player of the year award in the English Premier League.

The prestigious award will go to Tottenham's star Gareth Bale, unexpectedly nominated Manchester United's defender Michael Carrick, Chelsea's newcomer Eden Hazard, his teammate Juan Mata, the top scorer of the championship Luis Suarez, or the easily settled Robin van Persie within Man Utd.

Also nominated are candidates for the best young player title, among them the aforementioned Bale and Hazard, as well as Christian Benteke from Aston Villa, on loan from Chelsea Romelu Lukaku, Man Utd's striker Danny Welbeck, and Arsenal's attacking organizer Jack Wilshere.

Last season's best player in the general category was Van Persie from Arsenal, and among young footballers - Kyle Walker from Tottenham.

The best footballer is chosen by fellow professionals, listing two surnames on their ballot. "
