Many years ago, construction of the National Stadium began in Vilnius and it could be completed as early as 2016, with an estimated cost of about 270 million litas.

The stadium construction, which started in 1987, currently only has foundations. A new project has been planned for some time now, aiming to build a multifunctional stadium.

"The stadium should not only be dedicated to football. It could also be used for other sports and various events," said the Minister of Internal Affairs.

The construction of the National Stadium could begin as early as 2015 if Lithuania receives support from the European Union.

According to the minister, the stadium would belong to the Vilnius city municipality. After its construction, the National Stadium would be the largest and most versatile in Lithuania.

The stadium could accommodate approximately 25 thousand spectators.
