Mayor of Kaunas: the most rational solution - finally renovate the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Stadium © EuroFootball.com

In the public space, discussions have started about plans to complete the construction of the National Stadium in the capital for 270 million Lt. Kaunas Mayor Andrius Kupčinskas suggests a much more rational and even 12 times cheaper investment.

"Talking about financing projects of gigantic proportions sounds strange to me. It would be much more rational to finally renovate the currently largest stadium in the country, the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Stadium, which could become a stadium of national significance," emphasized the Mayor of Kaunas.

According to UEFA rules, official national team matches can only be held at stadiums with a status no lower than Category 3, while UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches can take place at Category 4 stadiums. According to specialists, the investment in the Kaunas stadium should be at least enough to achieve the best result, which is to provide Category 4. Preliminary estimates suggest that the reconstruction of the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Stadium would cost up to 20 million Lt.

"In order for the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Stadium to match the same level as the planned National Stadium in the capital, it would require 12 times less funding. The difference in funds is obvious, and the result achieved would be the final renovation of an object of national importance," said A. Kupčinskas.

A significant advantage of the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Stadium is the possibility of hosting not only football but also top-level athletics competitions. This summer, on June 22-23, the European Team Athletics Championships will take place at this stadium.

Currently, the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Stadium has 9180 seats for spectators. After reconstruction, this number would exceed 10,000 seats. During the reconstruction, a VIP stand, stadium grass heating system, new stadium lighting system, autonomous electrical energy system, and a separate stand for away team supporters would be installed.
