Rising Lithuanian football star Emilijus Zubas was named the best goalkeeper in the highest league of Poland.
Wearing the Belchatovo GKS jersey, the 22-year-old, 190 cm tall footballer spent just half a year in the neighboring country, but impressed coaches and experts with his impressive performance. Initially, without conceding a goal for nearly 500 minutes of play, he was recognized as the best player of the month in the league, and eventually received even more serious recognition.
Due to the similarity of his name to the legendary Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta, he is already nicknamed "Zubasaretta". Zubas, with his impressive performance, helped GKS not lose the last eight matches of the season and win five victories. However, a tragic start to the season led the team to narrowly remain in the last sixteenth place and drop to a lower division.
There is no doubt that the Lithuanian will not play for Belchatovo next season. He officially belongs to the Riga "Daugava" club, from which he was loaned to the Poles, but he will not return to Latvia. It is rumored that teams like the champion Warsaw "Legia", which Zubas has already been scouted by, and the legendary "Liverpool" are interested in him.
Zubas will have a great opportunity to show himself on the international stage this Friday. Due to the main goalkeeper Žydrūnas Karčemarskas' injury, he will defend the national team's goal in the World Cup qualifying match against Greece in Vilnius.
