Madrid star, Englishman David Beckham, expressed his disappointment with the lack of team fight in the Madrid derby that took place on Saturday.
Although the Royal club dominated the match against the city's other team, Atletico, the players on the field seemed sluggish, and the match ended in a goalless draw.
"I am disappointed that another season has ended without trophies," said the captain of the English national team. "You could see it on the faces of the other players. We wanted to put on a show for the spectators, but the match was boring. This probably happened because Barcelona had already been crowned champions earlier."
Beckham was probably even more dissatisfied with his performance than his teammates, as in the 61st minute of the match, the Englishman received a yellow card, meaning he will miss the last championship match away at Zaragoza. Beckham himself had already asked to be released early from Real so that he could join the national team on their tour to the United States.
Real coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was also dissatisfied with the team's performance in the city derby: "I am sad because the team, despite everything, should have found motivation for such historic matches. Fans were surely disappointed with the boring matches, which sometimes resembled a training game."
"It was difficult for the players to find motivation, but that's why I was worried before the match," said V. Luxemburgo.
Atletico's coach was also not completely satisfied with the team's performance. Atletico did not win in the last six championship matches and thus dropped out of the race for a spot in one of the European club tournaments.
"Just look at the tournament table to see that both teams were no longer fighting for anything," said Cesar Ferrando. "It's no wonder the match was lackluster. Nevertheless, my players could leave the field with their heads held high."
