Just one day after the resignation of Jose Couceiro, the head coach of this year's Portuguese vice-champions, the Portuguese club introduced a new coach at a press conference. The new coach is the successful Dutchman Co Adriaanse, who led the Alkmaar "AZ" team to success this year.
57-year-old Co Adriaanse received great praise after leading the Alkmaar "AZ" team, without any stars, to not only the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, but also to third place in the Dutch Championship.
At the press conference, Adriaanse promised that the team will play an attractive attacking football next season. He signed a two-year contract with "Porto," which will come into effect on July 1. The contract also includes the option to extend it for another year.
"Porto," who finished second in the Portuguese championship and were three points behind the champions "Benfica," parted ways with the coach J. Couicero on Sunday after the last game of the season. Couicero had been with the team since February and was the third coach of "Porto" since Jose Mourinho moved to "Chelsea" last summer.
On July 1st of this year, the club will lose three stars from the previous season's UEFA Champions League winners: Maniche, Costinha, and G. Seitaridis, so the new coach will have to build a new core team. By the way, recently C. Adriaanse told a Dutch radio station that he wants to lure the "Ajax" star Rafael van der Vaart to "Porto."
