Due to a relapse of the illness, Tito Vilanova, the head coach of the "Barcelona" team, has stepped down from his duties. He expressed regret for this decision but acknowledged that he couldn't fully perform his job.
On Friday, the club announced that the 44-year-old coach is leaving the team to continue the fight against recurrent cancer symptoms.
"I have to continue treatment and I can't devote myself 100% to the tasks that a coach must perform," said the football specialist.
Last December, T. Vilanova underwent surgery. Before returning to the club, he endured a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
T. Vilanova, who took over the helm of the club from Joseph Guardiola in June last year, thanked the "Barcelona" players and staff for their support and assured that he would like to return to the club.
"The five wonderful years I spent at this club would be a dream come true for any coach. However, it's time to focus my energy on the fight against the disease that was diagnosed to me a year and a half ago.
It's not easy to leave this special group of players, staff, and friends with whom I shared this memorable experience," T. Vilanova wrote in an open letter.
The new team coach should be announced at the beginning of next week.
