Former Scotland national team coach Berti Vogts has revealed that in the past he actively tried to persuade the then future football star Wayne Rooney to put on the jerseys of the team he led.
The German, who coached the team with a thistle on their backs from 2002 to 2004, traveled to England to speak with both the player himself and Everton's manager David Moyes.
"You could represent the Scotland national team," Vogts is quoted by the press as saying to the 16-year-old Rooney.
The forward's grandmother is Scottish and this would have opened the doors to represent the national team of this country.
However, W. Rooney was not swayed and a year later he was defending the honor of the England national team.
