On Tuesday, Cayetano Re, one of the brightest stars of the Paraguayan national team and "Barcelona" football players of the late 20th century, passed away in Elche, Valencia region.
He was 75 years old.
C.Re began his professional career in his hometown of Asuncion, where he represented the teams "Club Guarani" and "Cerro Poteno."
In 1959, the striker moved to Europe and spent three years defending the colors of the "Elche" club.
In 1962, the footballer put on the "Barcelona" shirt and spent the best years of his career there. Well-built, fast, and tactically mature, C. Re soon proved that the Catalan club had chosen him for a reason. In the years 1964-1965, the Paraguayan became the top scorer in the Spanish league, scoring 25 goals in 30 matches.
Throughout his time with Barcelona, C. Re played a total of 167 games and scored against opponents' goalkeepers 94 times.
With "Barcelona," C. Re won the King's Cup and the then UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (later UEFA Cup, now UEFA Europa League).
The Paraguayan also represented another Barcelona team, "Espanyol," and ended his professional career at the small Catalan club "Terrassa."
The footballer defended the national team's colors 25 times and played in the 1958 World Cup.
Later on, C. Re coached various clubs in Europe and South America, with his greatest success coming from leading the national team of his homeland. With them, C. Re reached the knockout stages of the planet's championship in 1986.
