The Russian press announces that the head of the so-called United Football League organizing committee Valerijus Gazajevas met with representatives of the Latvian Football Federation and discussed the prospect of organizing a joint Lithuanian and Latvian championship.
The new league would allegedly be called the Amber League. It would feature the strongest clubs from Latvia and Lithuania.
The general secretary of the Latvian Football Federation Janis Mežeckis is convinced that a joint championship between neighboring countries would be of a higher level, significantly increase spectator interest, attract sponsors, and interest television channels.
It is worth noting that a similar project in the Baltic countries recently experienced a failure. The Baltic League, established in 2007 with the strongest clubs from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, was quietly disbanded after the 2010-2011 season.
